Germany Donates $1,000,000 For Land Mine Removal

Vietnam - The German embassy in Hanoi recently announced that it will donate one million dollars in aid to help central Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri provinces to remove landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO). According to authorities, this will free up 150ha of land in the two provinces which will provide housing and cultivating land for 180 local young couples.

Afganistan - A new National Solidarity Programme aimed at strengthening a network of some 30,000 self-governing local community institutions in Afghanistan has been established by the government with the support of UN-HABITAT.

India - India's food-grains production has hovered around a fifth of a billion tonnes mark in recent years. More than self-sufficient, India frequently exports its surpluses. India in 55 years has emerged from famine ridden colonial times, as a famine free Republic. Its population has nearly tripled in that period. More significantly, India in 1947, lost some of its most fertile lands. But she has managed to stand up and falsify many prophesies of doom. India was the greatest success story of the Green Revolution. Although today her agriculture is at a cross-roads again, the Green Revolution of the sixties gained some crucial decades for India in which to rethink her way forward. The Revolution is also worth remembering for India's capacity for collective action. Pause a while therefore, before you decry India's administration for every ill in the land.

Should the Enlightened take sides in Politics?

The email was terse and to the point – the tone especially pointed as we get such little negative correspondence. (As a publication promoting enlightened living, most of our email is of the “You guys are great!” variety.) Someone had recommended, said the emailer, that he advertise with us, but after seeing the “MoveOn.org ” banner on our website, he would not even consider it. A magazine which presumed to take a spiritual tone should be above politics, and certainly should not take sides. Move On is an activist organization with a very divisive tone, whose stated goal is to remove Dubya from office on Nov.2.
