Our Purpose
Our intent is to provide you with timely news and resources from the
leading edge of human achievement. The conventional media focuses almost
entirely on individual or collective human failure and dysfunction. While this
represents only a tiny fraction of the human experience, it dominates the media
and therefore molds our individual thoughts and collective consciousness. Since
we know that "form follows thought," it is only logical that as we continue to
collectively focus on failure, we will continue to create more of the same.
The world faces many challenges and it is important to acknowledge these and
deal with them. The conventional press and most of the alternative press are
doing an excellent job of bringing these to our attention.
Our intent is to report on events, activities, achievements, project and
people who represent the highest and best of human endeavor and what we can
achieve, both individually and collectively. We believe that this represents the
true nature of who we are.
Our purpose is not only to inform and inspire, but to provide cross cultural
models from around the world as to what people are doing to solve world problems
and create new options.
Positive News completely shares these aims and objectives with those of GVN.
We see the Global Village as those throughout the world who have seen a vision
of a new era and are dedicated into bringing it into reality.

Positive News was handed the guardianship
of Global Village News and Resources in summer of 2004. Although we would like
to continue to make the archives available to subscribers and readers we would
like to point out that stories published prior to issue 89 were not under our
editorial guidance and would like to make a distinction that these are not
necessarily a reflection of the current opinions of our editorial team.
Muslim Peace Prayer March Draws
700,000
INDONESIA - Surabaya, Indonesias second largest city, was the site
of a March 9th 'peace prayer march' organized by Indonesia's leading
Islamic organization, the moderate Nahdlatul Ulama. Government officials
estimated the crowd at 700,000. ''We are not defending Saddam Hussein
but we are simply defending humanity, justice and world order,''
Fachruddin Masturoh, NU's deputy spiritual head, told the crowd.
Politicians and religious leaders alike believe that a U.S. attack on
Iraq will spark a severe backlash in this traditionally moderate Muslim
county, radicalizing particularly the youth. This is of particular
concern to the moderates. "We won't be listened to anymore,'' said
Hasyim Muzadi, head of the 40-million strong Nahdlatul Ulama.
That warning is underscored by Muhammad Rizieq, chief of Indonesia's
militant Islamic "Defenders' Front." ''If the war starts tomorrow, the
next day we will have thousands of new Osama bin Ladens who will be
ready to destroy U.S. facilities anywhere on earth. We are campaigning
for the public to besiege and take over the U.S. embassy if war breaks
out.''
Reflecting the government position, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda
told the gathering he hoped they would set a peaceful example for other
anti-war actions and help change U.S. President George W. Bush's
policies. ''Hopefully, he can open his ears and listen and open his
heart too,'' Wirajuda said.
In nearby Malaysia, where Islam is the state religion, the
pro-government New Straits Times said in a recent editorial that there
was ''no moral case for war against Iraq'' because it was not about
weapons of mass destruction, terrorism or liberating an oppressed
people. ''It is about the imposition of a Pax Americana on the Middle
East. All the justifications -- democracy, human rights and regional
stability -- echo the double-talk used by 19th century European
imperialists, who conquered and plundered Africa and Asia to bring
godliness and civilization to the heathens.''
About 85 percent of Indonesia's 210 million people are Muslim. The
vast majority are moderate and support government moves against Islamic
militants suspected of bombing the nation's tourist island of Bali last
October, killing 202 people.
But neither the government nor most Indonesians are sympathetic to
U.S. policy on Iraq.
