Jews & Muslims Celebrate Hannukah-Ramadan Together In The Galilee
The Holy Land - In these days of darkness with ever more violence in the Holy Land, Ruach Shalom/Ruh al-Salaam sponsored a special event to keep the light of hope alive. Over 70 people gathered on Wednesday, December 4th, 2002 to celebrate Hanukkah and Ramadan in the Western Galilee city of Tamra. This was a shared sacred time being the 6th night of Hanukkah and the last day of Ramadan.

South Africa - Four years ago three South African women got together and tried to figure out what 40,000 delegates at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg spent two weeks this summer wrestled with: how to stop hunger. Calling themselves FeedSA, they took direct action and set up a website hoping to generate enough hits to raise money for food. But they soon found that this could not generate the amount of money they needed for the demand they were experiencing. At this point, says co-founder Heather Berger, they began looking at alternative ways of generating more income, both with fundraising as well as helping the hungry to find ways to generate income for themselves.

United Kingdom - The healing effects of music have always been known and have been enshrined in the Orpheus legend, but perhaps the person who has done most to popularise this in recent years is Professor Oliver Sacks. He has described the effects of music on a number of neurological syndromes and documented them in books such as Awakenings, A Leg to Stand On, and famously, The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat.

We Balinese have an essential concept of balance. It's the Tri Hita Karana; a concept of harmonious balance. The balance between god and humanity; humanity with itself and humanity with the environment. This places us all in a universe of common understanding.

It is not only nuclear bombs which have fallout. It is our job to minimize this fallout for our people and our guests from around the world. Who did this? It's not such an important question for us to discuss. Why this happened - maybe this is more worthy of thought. What can we do to create beauty from this tragedy and come to an understanding where nobody feels the need to make such a statement again? This is important. This is the basis from which we can embrace everyone as a brother; everyone as a sister.
