Our Purpose
Our intent is to provide you with timely news and resources from the leading edge of human achievement. The conventional media focuses almost entirely on individual or collective human failure and dysfunction. While this represents only a tiny fraction of the human experience, it dominates the media and therefore molds our individual thoughts and collective consciousness. Since we know that "form follows thought," it is only logical that as we continue to collectively focus on failure, we will continue to create more of the same.

The world faces many challenges and it is important to acknowledge these and deal with them. The conventional press and most of the alternative press are doing an excellent job of bringing these to our attention.

Our intent is to report on events, activities, achievements, project and people who represent the highest and best of human endeavor and what we can achieve, both individually and collectively. We believe that this represents the true nature of who we are.

Our purpose is not only to inform and inspire, but to provide cross cultural models from around the world as to what people are doing to solve world problems and create new options.

Positive News completely shares these aims and objectives with those of GVN. We see the Global Village as those throughout the world who have seen a vision of a new era and are dedicated into bringing it into reality.

Awarding Real Ingenuity

The Eurosolar Awards pay tribute to those that have created inspiring projects and have given outstanding service to the promotion of renewable energy.

The ten UK awards were presented by Energy 21, a grass-roots networking organisation that brings together local groups trying to reduce carbon emissions in their area. These projects are in turn put forward for the Eurosolar European Awards.

One award went to Will Anderson for his home in Clapham. ‘The Tree House’ not only creates its own energy but also enough to sell back to the national grid. It was the basis for The Independent’s column, Diary of an Eco Builder. "It brought new ideas about sustainability and renewable energy to a huge number of non-green people," said the judges.

In the same category John and Mary Twidell were awarded for having one of the greenest homes in the country. With 95 per cent fossil-carbon free heating and 100 per cent fossil-carbon free electricity, their environmental impact is minimal. The project applied a variety of renewable power sources, all of which are covered in the book, Renewable Energy Resources, co-written by John Twidell which is now widely used as a university resource. "Writing university textbooks is one thing, but living an exemplary life is something else!" said the judges. "The whole approach to energy in their house has been extremely well thought through."

These are only a selection of those who received awards and commendations for their work to reduce the impact society has upon the environment. Awarding these examples not only gives them the recognition they deserve but also enables a wider audience to see these often groundbreaking projects.

Other laureates included:

  • Brill Church of England school won the commercial enterprise award for their environmentally friendly classroom extension

  • The Elliot Park Innovation Centre (EPIC) in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was awarded for the solar Architecture award for their use of renewable power sources

  • Somerset Council was awarded in the transport category for their national biofuel programme.

  • Musician, composer and passionate protester for the lowering of carbon emissions, Aubrey Meyer received a UK Eurosolar award for the founding of Contraction and Convergence

  • Sefton council was awarded the Local Authorities prize for the ground source heating pumps, which heated their eco-visitor centre.

  • Dr Robert Rippengall was awarded for extraordinary personal commitment. His vision, enthusiasm, vast industry knowledge and optimism were pivotal in the rapid growth of the biomass industry.

  • The Hydrogen and Renewables Integration (HARI) Project was winner in the 2006 Eurosolar UK Awards under the nonprofit organisations category

  • The Co-housing Company for the Springhill Co-housing Community was the first new build co-housing community in the UK and was awarded for its use of photo voltaic cells
