As the last edition of Positive News newspaper was going to print the multinational United Nations climate change conference was taking place. Over 10,000 attendees gathered for the 11th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference to address the critical steps that must be taken to tackle climate change. Issues such as the Kyoto Protocol were top of the agenda, an area in which huge amount of progress was made. “This has been one of the most productive UN Climate Change Conferences ever.” Said Richard Kindly, United Nations Climate Change Secretariat, “Our success in implementing the Kyoto Protocol, improving the Convention and Kyoto, and innovating for tomorrow led to an agreement on a variety of issues. This plan sets the course for future action on climate change.” The conference was also a platform for many plans of action going further then 2012 which was previously the horizon for climate change plans and the date for the end of the Kyoto Protocol. One huge development was the creation of the “Montreal Action Plan” a term coined by it’s creator and Canadian environmental minister Stephane Dion who said, “Finally, we have achieved what many claimed was unattainable, a decision launching a dialogue on long-term cooperative action to address climate change by enhancing implementation of the Convention.” Co-operation was another key focus of the conferences and a strong emphasis was put on giving leniency to developing countries as strict emissions laws can have crippling effects on their economies.
